Welcome to our Web page. The St. Croix Valley Genealogical Society was formed 19 April 1979 as a chapter of the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society. We are most interested in collecting, preserving, and publishing genealogical and biographical materials relating to areas associated with the St. Croix River Valley and in particular, areas in Pierce and St. Croix counties, Wisconsin. The St. Croix River forms the boundary between Northwestern Wisconsin and Central Minnesota. River Falls is located just 35 miles east of St. Paul and is the meeting location for SCVGS.

Meetings
Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month, September through May starting at 7:00 p.m. and are held in the River Falls Public Library. The programs cover a variety of material from general to specific and are planned to hold the interest of everyone. A business meeting follows the program and besides the usual secretary's report, treasurer's report, and publications report, information is provided on various upcoming genealogy events in the area, the state, and the nation. There is also wonderful treats and a time to visit with others during the break between the program and business meeting.
The River Falls Public Library is a beautifully designed building located at 140 Union Street at the corner of Union and Main Streets. Main Street is also Wisconsin State Highway 35. Turn east on Union Street beside the library and proceed to the parking lot behind the building where there is ample parking. The meeting room is on the main floor just inside the doors and is handicapped accessible.
Up-coming Programs:
March 19, 2009 - Publishing Your Family History Using Web-Based Tools - Linda Coffin of Minneapolis, MN has been a graphic designer for over 25 years. Her business, History Crafters, helps people turn their family heirlooms into stories and their stories into family heirlooms. She will share the techniques she uses to help people write and publish their family histories using Web-based publishers. You can learn more on her Web site at History Crafters.
April 16, 2009 - Native Americans in St. Croix County (Wisconsin). Speaker Sandy Burleigh of Eau Claire, WI, formerly of Baldwin, has been involved in pioneer research in St. Croix County for over 25 years. One of the most surprising elements of her study was the passion she discovered she had for knowledge on area Native American interaction with the pioneers. The Natives here were most generally helpful to the newly relocated settlers and taught them many survival methods, thus nurturing a healthy relationship. The land, the earth, and nature were of utmost importance to the early Native Americans, and perhaps many of the practices we observe and continue to practice today stem from these teachings passed on to the prairie settlers by their native neighbors. The Native Americans were great storytellers and have shared many "quotes of great wisdom".
May 21, 2009 - Prescott Project - Tim Ericson is a charter member of SCVGS, former archivist at the Area Research Center on the University of Wisconsin-River Falls campus, former archivist at the Wisconsin Historical Society, retired professor of archival studies at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and past president of the Society of American Archivists. He will present the research he has conducted covering the large group of pre-Civil War blacks who lived in Prescott, WI in the mid-1800s.
The 30th Anniversary of SCVGS will also be celebrated at this meeting. Stay for special refreshments following the presentation.
