Donation of Time

River Falls Meyer Middle School students Rheanna Steele,  Heather Shew, Erik Dartsch and Jack Bruns from Mr. Campbell’s 8th Grade Career Class choose to coordinate a fundraiser for the Free Clinic of Pierce and St. Croix Counties as a service-learning project.  Students were assigned to identify needs for services in the community, then determine ways they could actively get involved in helping address those needs.

Free Clinic staff Mary Steele was delighted the students picked the clinic as their service project. Clinic nights require volunteers to be 18, but there are other ways to support the clinic without direct patient contact. After the students learned about the Free Clinic’s mission and the need for funding to support its operations, they quickly acted to organize a fundraiser as a meaningful way to help.

Group members contacted EconoFoods in River Falls to see if they could hold a fundraiser in the store entrance. The answer was yes. They were also advised that the day before Thanksgiving was a very big shopping day. The students were already approved to receive cookies from the local Best Maid Cookie Company to sell at their fundraiser. The group gathered to package and label the cookies and bars, and made a list of things they would need to set up its operations.

EconoFoods’ customers graciously responded to the students by buying cookies, making donations, and offering thanks for supporting the Free Clinic and taking time over their winter break to get involved in the community.

On that day, the students learned so many lessons beyond the classroom. The main one: Regardless of your age, experiences or training, each of us has the ability to make a difference.

Our thanks to these students for their contribution and congratulations for pulling off a successful fundraiser. The Free Clinic is a collaborative effort. The students’ participation is just one example of how people can get involved to support its mission.

Special thanks to Mr. Campbell for inspiring his students to fulfill their potential for doing heartfelt work that makes this world a better place.
