Neighborhoods!

Lets say you have decided to buy a condo, buy a lot, buy a home or start a building project. As you sort through the potential options as to where you want to locate your home be sure and have a thorough understanding of the things you will face as a resident.

Perhaps you have seen a condo priced at a level you think something must be wrong. Perhaps the lot you are considering seems to be priced so low that seems too good to be true. Or does the owner of the home you are considering seem to be pressed to sell?

A fact of life in the U.S. Virgin Islands, just like anywhere else, is that there are disadvantages to certain areas. An area may have a history of crime, or there could be a history of undesirable activities, or the area might look strikingly beautiful to you as a visitor but when you are faced with some of the practical realities it becomes a distinct hardship.

Beginning in 2001 Island News began a series on VI neighborhoods in which in each issue we review all of the attributes of a particular area in the islands. One issue may cover an area on St John, the next an area on St Croix and the next a particular area on St Thomas. We have done this so that prospective residents have a way to understand the tradeoffs in the area they are considering as a future home. We tell you if the area has been victimized by robberies, we tell you if the area is sufficiently remote that after a year of residency the trips back to civilization get to be burden. We tell you if real estate in the area is on the upswing or if the area seems to be decaying in value.

As we review each area we will add the area to our list of areas reviewed in the "neighborhoods" section of the back issue articles on this web page. We are open to add a particular area to our "to do" list if you wish to have our report for an upcoming decision, or as a subscriber you are always welcome to call in and ask about areas you have interest in.
